More About This Program

The Institute of Medicine (IoM) initiated the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course in July 1978. The curriculum was designed in such a way that the teaching learning experiences integrate basic medical sciences with clinical disciplines. There is a strong community orientation, stress on self-directed and problem-based learning. More than 1200 doctors have graduated from the programme and are serving the health institutions not only inside the country but also in neighboring countries and even in nations of the developed world. The original curriculum prepared in 1978 had undergone a number of revisions and the last change was in 1994.

A number of changes has taken place over the last few years in the field of medical education, thus, revision to reflect the changing needs has become imperative. In the process of revising this curriculum, feedback from current students and graduates, faculties and suggestions from employers and the community have been taken into account. In addition, the changing national and global burden of diseases, emerging and reemerging diseases and the skills to manage them have been incorporated. Considerations of national and global needs have become essential particularly in view of the changing profile of the students joining the programme; almost one third of the students joining the programme are from outside the country.

The curriculum follows the following pattern – description of the courses, objectives and contents. Teaching-learning methods and evaluation scheme is placed separately. The duration of the course is of five and half years which consist of four and half years of academic course and one year of compulsory rotating internship.

The aim of this programme is to produce socially responsible and competent physicians, who are willing and able to meet the existing and emerging challenges of national and international health care system.
