By improving the existing Karnali Zonal Hospital in Jumla, the Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS) was created on October 20, 2011 (2068/07/03) by an Act of the Nepali parliament. By building a health institute in Jumla and a KAHS working district to generate qualified medical professionals who can provide high-quality healthcare services and carry out health research, KAHS hopes to provide access to affordable, high-quality healthcare and education for the residents of underdeveloped (Pichhadiyako) areas. Karnali is one of the nine backward districts listed in the KAHS statute.
